Zwarte PietSinterklaas's helper Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) has his origin in the bishop's legendary past. Three small Moorish boys were sentenced to death for a crime they did not commit. The bishop intervened, saving them. To show their gratitude, the boys remained with Sinterklaas to help him, tumbling and jumping on rooftops on Sinterklaas night to deliver presents. Their black skin may refer either to their Moorish background, or to the job of chimneysweep, an option is corroborated by their clothes, reminiscent of an Italian chimneysweep's costume and Piet's rooftop occupation.

Sinterklaas and his Black Piets usually carry a bag which contains candy for nice children and a roe, a chimney sweep's broom made of willow branches, used to spank naughty children. Some of the older Sinterklaas songs make mention of naughty children being put in the bag and being taken back to Spain. The Zwarte Pieten toss candy around, a tradition supposedly originating in Sint Nicolaas' story of saving three young girls from prostitution by tossing golden coins through their window at night to pay their father's debts.[edit]

Truth, liberation, illumination cannot be secured through another.
Man has from times immemorial depended on a Guru, a religion or a book to show him the way. Krishnamurti has pointed out that truth is a pathless land and no Guru, no path, no belief, no book can lead you to it.

You have to be a light unto yourself and not seek light from another. The role of the Guru is only to point out, it is the individual himself who has to learn. And the ability to learn is far more important than the ability to teach. In this field, no one can really teach anything to anyone else.

Each one has to come upon the truth for himself and one must begin with knowing oneself. Without understanding the workings of one's own thought-process and the conditioning one has acquired from one's own experiences, traditions, culture, religion etc., one cannot find the true answer to any serious question. Our beliefs, our opinions, conclusions, prejudices, prevent us from seeing things in their true perspective because they colour our vision. One must be aware of this fact and doubt every opinion, every conclusion that comes to the mind for it may not represent the truth. When one inquires into oneself in that way, with the intention of seeking the truth and not merely seeking satisfaction, learning takes place. And one must live with that state of inquiry, questioning and doubting all through one's life, without seeking to arrive.

If we do depend on others psychologically we become second hand people, which we are. The whole history of mankind is in us, the whole story of mankind is not in books - there is, in outward things but the whole history is here. And we don't know how to read that. And if we could read it - and to read it you are not the reader. You understand what I am saying? You are the book. But when you read the book as a reader it has no meaning.

But if you are the book and the book is showing you, telling you the story, and you are not telling the story but the book is telling, then you will not depend on a single person, then one will be a light to oneself. But we are all waiting for the match of another, the fire of another. And perhaps that is why you are all here.

And that is where the tragedy lies because we cannot see clearly for ourselves. And before we help others we have to see clearly, for god's sake! It is like then the blind leading the blind.


Questioner: Is there God?

Krishnamurti: I wonder what value it would have if I said yes or no. To deny or assert would not reveal the reality. One has to discover for oneself; therefore, you cannot accept or deny. If I said yes, what would happen? It would be another belief to be added to your museum of beliefs. If I said no, that also would belong to a museum, of another type. One way or the other, it is of no importance to you. If I said yes, I would become an authority, and you might perhaps mold your life on that pattern; if I said no, that would also lay down a pattern. You cannot approach this problem - whether there is God or not - with any prejudice either for or against. What you can do is prepare the soil of the mind and see what happens, that is, let the mind free itself from all illusions, from all fears, prejudices, and longings, and be without any expectation whatsoever; then such a mind can discern whether there be God or not. One has a speculative mind, and for intellectual amusement one tries to solve this question; but such a mind cannot find a true answer. All that you can do is to break through the falseness, the illusions that you have created about yourselves. And this demands, not an inquiry into the existence of God, but the action of completeness, of your whole being, in the present.
