GOOD: The Origin of Memorial Day

Source: www.youtube.com
Memorial Day wasn't always about barbeques, road trips, and the beginning of summer. In this original GOOD video, we honor the solemn roots of America's three-day weekend. Directed by Simon Hawkins Animation by Chris Weller Produced by Max Joseph Music by Paul Robeson
The Origin of Memorial Day
Emancipated slaves marked the first Memorial Day on May 1,1865,at the Race Course in Charlseton,Virgina.
The liberated slaves unearth the dead Union soldiers, placed them into individual graves and declared it a Union cemetery.
On May 30,1868,the ritual officially took hold when the freed slaves retured to the graveyard and decorated the gravesites, thus creation the first Decoration Day.
In 1967,Decoration Day was renamed Memorial Day.
