Free your mind return 2 the source African Origins Part 11 of 11,
Listervelt Middleton and Dr Asa G Hilliard III discuss the Egyptian Origins Of civilization. Discussion on the distortions of facts about Ancient Egypt. Also discusses the importance of learning from the Ancient wisdom of Egypt especially for Africans. Discusses the importance for African Americans knowing their history, not only America but their African History as well.

And that's appropriate, you know and uh to,to be told that Shakespeare a knowledge of Shakespeare,in fact a man who just published a book called cultural literacy,uh Ed Hirsch and uh in that he had 4000 things that everybody is suppose to know. And the biggest chunk of the list that he produced about what everyone in the world is suppose to know to be consider culturally literature is information on Ancient European history which is the Greeco-Roman world.' So why do they do that ?because they know that cultural unity is equal to political unity and economic power.'

(Listervelt Middleton) And so the person who is watching who might be working at McDonalds or some college it is important that

(Asa ) Yeah,(Listervelt Middleton) It is important that their children see their images and read about themselves because what? (Dr.Asa Hilliard) It is important because, without self knowledge you have no orientation ,in other words its like a person walking around with amnesia, with no memory' Uh you don't really have a background to use to explain the experiences that you're having.'

So when any group of people 'disconnect' itself from its own 'historical tradition' IT IS AT THE MERCY OF ANY ONE ELSE WHO COMES ALONG AND TRY TO HELP THEM LOOK AT THINGS ON A DAY BY DAY BASIS.

(Listervelt Middleton) Quickly ,what is wrong with a people reading, always reading the history of another people?

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) Well, first i think you should read everyone's history.' But i think if we always read the history of someone else,we will become psychologically un balanced' we will become,uh PEOPLE WHO DO NOT BELONG ANY WHERE.' BECAUSE ITS CLEAR YOU CAN NOT BELONG TO SOMEONE ELSES HISTORY.'

(Listervelt Middleton) You mention the thing about the sheep dog some time ago.

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) You want to hear the story about the sheep dog?

(Listervelt Middleton) yeah,quickly ,quickly.'
(Dr.Asa Hilliard) Okay,uh.
(Listervelt Middleton) you have a plane to catch?

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) I do have a plane to catch.' so this have to be a short sheepdog story.' basically its a true story about uh how sheepdogs are trained, and that you train a sheepdog,a dog that you can whistle and tell him to go herd sheep, and only can sit down on the hill, and his master can sit on the hill and this dog will run all over in the hot sun and herd sheep for him where ever he wants him to go' by signal.' And the way he trains the dog to do that is to uh,put that dog ,as ah, as it is born, into a pin with sheep' and this dog actually nurses and eats, its sucks on a sheep mother' and it grows up thinking its a 'sheep' in other words it has the body ,intelligence ,endurance, strength of a dog' but it have the mind or a 'sheep' so that it is then pliable, amenable, it can be trained to do things that are very un -dog like.' and uh do things even not in its own interest' uh,do things that uh really are not benofficial to his siblings, for example he could see a dog that was born at the same time from the same mother, but if he never saw that dog until he was an adult,he would treat his own brother as if he's the enemy.'

(Listervelt Middleton) So the black the black child the black student who is always reading someone else's history exclusively

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) Is like a sheepdog? YES!

(Listervelt Middleton)Okay (

Dr.Asa Hilliard) Is that what you

(Listervelt Middleton)lets get a quick one.

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) you want one or two more slides.Okay here's a good one.I have collected together some of the images that we have been looking at,mixed them with mages of African Americans and African people to emphasize the theme that you heard before from dr. yosef ben-jochannan that says they all look alike. And what he's of course referring to is that no matter where African people have been dispersed through out the world that the , they still hold not only the physical image of Africa but they also hold the cultural orientation of African people.' And that may be a good slide to to uh stop on.

(Listervelt Middleton) Oh really?
(Dr.Asa Hilliard) If you got more time.
(Listervelt Middleton)with all that you have said, what is the most important thing that the black parent, the black child, the black teacher can do?

(Dr.Asa Hilliard)Okay,uh speaking as an educator and as a psychologist now and trying to identify the most urgent priority that i can find that will help us to do what we have to do and that is that i think there is

(Listervelt Middleton) what we have to do the goal here is what?

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) the goal is unity and 'RESURRECTION'

(Listervelt Middleton) AND LIBERATION'

(Dr.Asa Hilliard)WELL LIBERATION FOR RESURRECTION.' AS A PEOPLE,NOT JUST THE INDIVIDUAL,I THINK ITS IMPORTANT FOR OUR PEOPLE TO BE STRONG AGAIN.' In order for that to happen it means that there has to be uh systematic uh activity i guest i call it 'STUDY TO RESTORE MEMORY.' In other words PARENTS AND CHILDREN AND TEACHERS A LIKE HAS TO BE RE-EDUCATED! THEY HAVE TO HAVE NEW INFORMATION AND NEW INSIGHTS THAT GIVE THEM A BASIS FOR LOOKING IN A DIFFERENT WAY AT THE EXPERIENCE WE HAPPEN TO BE ENGAGED IN.' SO THAT MEANS A STUDY OF HISTORY.' THAT MEANS A STUDY OF CULTURE.' THAT MEANS CREATING THE INSTITUTIONS THAT WILL LET US PRACTICE THAT HISTORY AND PRACTICE THAT CULTURE.'

(Listervelt Middleton) Is the answer money necessarily?

(Dr.Asa Hilliard) I don't think that the answer ,money would be great but I don't think that answer is money ,it's interesting to me that as I go around the country and look at an African-American Bookstores, that its the grassroots people that seem to be buying the books, that many of the African Americas who have gotten bachelor's masters and doctorate degrees, are not readers.' uh their not using their minds to refresh their perspective and many book store owners will tell you that
(Listervelt Middleton) so what does this tell you about the talented ten?
(Dr.Asa Hilliard) It tell you that many of the talented ten according to Carter G Woodson have been MIS-EDUCATED!...

(Listervelt Middleton) Well you haven't and we thank you.'
(Dr.Asa Hilliard) Thank you.'
